5.3.2 Type I, class 2 opener. The opener shall be placed in the cutting position on an open can
and the wing clamped in a holding device. A weight or a force of not less than 8 pounds shall then be applied to the bottom inside of the can in a vertical downward direction for not less than one minute. The opener shall then be removed from the can and the holding device and the opener
used to open nine No. 10 round cans. The can opener shall open at least six of the nine cans in one motion without slipping off or requiring an additional attempt. If any of the remaining three cans requires more than two attempts by the can opener to completely open it, the can opener shall be considered deficient. During the openings, the opener shall be observed to determine compliance with the operational requirements of 3.1.2 (i.e., operate freely without binding). After all cans
have been opened, they shall be examined to determine compliance with the metal sliver or chip,
and jagged or irregular edge requirements of 3.1.2. The opener shall then be examined to determine compliance with the parts separation, breaking, and permanent deformation requirements of 3.1.2.
5.3.3 Type II opener. The opener shall be secured to a wall or holding device by the wall- mounting bracket and an open No. 10 round can placed in the cutting position. The opener shall then be tested as specified in 5.3.2 to determine conformance with 3.1.3.
5.3.4 Types III and IV openers. The opener shall be placed in an operating position on a table or bench and an open No. 12 round can placed in the cutting position. A weight or a force of not less than 25 pounds shall then be applied to the inside bottom of the can in a vertical downward direction for not less than 1 minute. The can shall then be removed from the opener and three No.
12 round cans, and three 4½ by 4½ inch square cans shall be opened. In addition, four No. 10 round cans, commercially packed four to a case, weighing not less than 6 pounds each, shall be dented by dropping the case from a height of not less than 2 feet onto a flat concrete surface. The case shall be dropped once on each of the six sides and once on each of the four diagonal corners. The dented cans shall also be opened. The opener shall be observed while opening the cans to determine compliance with the operation and binding requirements of 3.1.4 and 3.1.5. The opened cans shall be examined to determine compliance with the metal slivers or chips, and the jagged or irregular edge requirements of 3.1.4 and 3.1.5. The opener shall then be examined to determine compliance with the parts separation, breaking, and permanent deformation requirements of 3.1.4 and 3.1.5.
