3.3 Finish. All carbon steel components, except the feed wheels, cutting wheels, blades and gears, shall be chromium plated, nickel plated, or nickel and chromium plated in accordance with the manufacturer's standard commercial practice. All exposed surfaces of corrosion-resisting steel components shall have a 2B (100 grit) finish or better. All other metal parts shall be finished
in accordance with the manufacturer's commercial practice.
3.4 Lubrication. All points of can openers requiring lubrication shall be lubricated with the manufacturer's recommended food service equipment grade lubricant. The lubricant shall not cause food contamination.
3.5 Workmanship. The finished openers shall be clean and free of rust, slivers, die marks, deformities, and fractures. All sharp edges and corners, except cutting edges and feed wheel serrations shall be removed. The cutting wheels and blades shall be sharp and free of burrs and slivers. The cutting wheels and blades may have a radii on the cutting edge so that the blade will shear, instead of cutting the metal to avoid slivers. Sharp edges on the gear teeth shall be removed. Feed wheel serrations, or teeth, shall be sharp, uniform in shape, and equally spaced, and burrs and slivers shall be removed.
3.5.1 Plating. Plating shall be free of blisters, peeling, chipping, areas of no coverage, and imbedded foreign matter.
3.5.2 Castings. Castings shall be complete and free of porosity, cracks, blow holes, and deformities.
3.5.3 Welds. Welds shall be sound, smooth, and free from pits, fractures, burn through, or fissures. All scale or flux shall be removed. Spot welds shall be free of flashes.
3.5.4 Rivets. All burrs shall be removed from rivet holes. Rivet heads and peened ends shall be round and in full contact with the joined metal. There shall be no missing rivets.
3.5.5 Threaded fasteners. Threaded fasteners shall be drawn tight and shall not be stripped or cross- threaded. Washers, lockwashers, and bushings shall be provided where required in accordance with standard commercial practice.
3.6 Metric products. Products manufactured to metric dimensions will be considered on an equal basis with those manufactured using inch-pound units, provided they fall within the tolerances specified using conversion tables contained in the latest revision of ASTM SI 10, and all other requirements of this document are met. If a product is manufactured to metric dimensions and those dimensions exceed the tolerances specified in the inch-pound units, a request should be made to the contracting officer to determine if the product is acceptable. The contracting officer has the option of accepting or rejecting the product.
