3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
3.1 Design. The openers shall be of the types, classes, and grades as specified in 3.1.1 through 3.1.5. All parts that come in contact with, or may be contaminated by food, shall be easily cleaned.
3.1.1 Type I, class 1 opener. The type I, class 1 opener shall be grade A or grade B and shall be hand- operated by leverage. The opener shall have a blade, a cap opener, a handle, and a can bead guide. The handle shall have rounded surfaces to provide comfortable operation. The type I, class 1 openers shall open all size cans up to and including No. 10 round. The opener shall show no evidence of breaking, parts separation, or permanent deformation when load and performance are tested as specified in 5.3.1.
3.1.2 Type I, class 2 opener. The type I, class 2 opener shall be grade A or grade B and shall be hand- operated by turning a wing-operated feed wheel to force the can top against the cutting wheel. The feed and cutting wheels shall each have an interlocking gear which together functions to turn the cutting wheel whenever the feed wheel turns. The gears shall provide a positive rotation of the cutting wheel upon operations of the wing crank. The feed wheel shall be case hardened to a depth of 0.008 inch or greater to a Rockwell 15-N hardness of 89 to 90. The cutting wheel shall be case hardened to a depth of 0.006
inch or greater to Knoop hardness ranges as follows: 0.002 inch = 600-700, 0.004 inch = 500-700, 0.006 inch = 500-700. The opener shall consist of a body with a can guide, a wing-operated feed wheel, a cutting wheel, and a plier-type pressure device to force the cutting wheel through the can top and hold
the can in the cutting position while pressure is applied. The opener shall have an integral bottle cap
opener. The handle width shall be a minimum of 0.4 inches. The handles shall have rounded surfaces to provide comfortable operation. The handle padding material shall be fully enclosed around the opener and have no open gaps which allow food accumulation. The type I, class 2 openers shall remove the tops
from all size cans up to and including No. 10 round, and shall support cans which weigh up to 8 pounds
in the cutting position. The opener shall operate freely without binding and shall show no evidence of parts separation, breaking, or permanent deformation and shall remove the tops from cans without producing metal slivers, chips, jagged or irregular edges when tested as specified in 5.3.2.
3.1.3 Type II opener. The type II opener shall be grade A or grade B and shall be wall-mounted and operated by a hand crank. The opener shall consist of a wall-mounting bracket, an extension arm, a geared cutting wheel, a geared feed wheel, a crank, a cutting wheel lever, and a magnetic lid lifter. The feed and cutting wheels shall each have an interlocking gear which together function to turn the cutting wheel whenever the feed wheel turns. The gears shall provide a positive rotation of the cutting wheel
