upon operation of the wing crank. The feed wheel shall be case hardened to a depth of 0.008 inch or greater to a Rockwell 15-N hardness of 89 to 90. The cutting wheel shall be case hardened to a depth of
0.006 inch or greater to Knoop hardness ranges as follows: 0.002 inch = 600-700, 0.004 inch = 550-700,
0.006 inch = 500-700. The type II opener shall remove the tops from all size cans up to and including No.10 round, and shall support cans which weigh up to 8 pounds, in the cutting position. The opener shall operate freely without binding and shall show no evidence of parts separation, breaking, or permanent deformation and shall remove the tops from cans without producing metal slivers, chips, jagged or irregular edges when tested as specified in 5.3.3.
3.1.4 Type III opener. The type III opener shall be grade A and shall be table-mounted and operated by a hand crank. The opener shall consist of a body, a feed wheel, a cutting wheel, a can holder, a crank and knob, a can guide, a vertical shaft, a table clamping bracket, and when required, a magnetic lid lifter (see
7.1). The feed and cutting wheels may be geared or without gears at the option of the manufacturer. The feed and cutting wheels shall be hardened to a Rockwell C hardness of 53 to 58. The feed and cutting wheel gears (if present) shall be hardened to a Rockwell C hardness of 45 to 50. The type III
opener shall remove the tops from all size cans up to and including No. 12 round having weights up to 25 pounds. The opener shall operate freely without binding and shall show no evidence of parts separation, breaking, or permanent deformation and shall remove the tops from cans without producing metal slivers, chips, jagged or irregular edges, when tested as specified in 5.3.4.
3.1.5 Type IV opener. The type IV opener shall be grade B, table-mounted with no base, or with
a bolt-on base or clamp-on base (see 7.1), and operated by a hand crank. The opener shall consist of a body, a feed wheel, a reversible cutting blade, a can holder, a can guide, a crank and knob, a vertical shaft, and a table-mounting bracket. The type IV opener shall remove the tops from all size cans up to and including No. 12 round, 9½ inches square with corner radii over 1¼ inches, and 9½ inches oblong or pear-shaped cans, having weights of up to 25 pounds. The opener shall operate freely without binding
and shall show no evidence of parts separation, breaking, or permanent deformation, and shall remove the tops from cans without producing metal slivers, chips, jagged or irregular edges, when tested as specified in 5.3.4.
3.1.5.1 Can opener adapter. A can opener adapter (see 7.1) shall be required when the type IV openers are to be used in the old table or counter type III opener mountings.
3.2 Materials. Materials used shall be of the quality normally used by the manufacturer in manufacturing his standard commercial can openers. When grade B is specified for types I, II, or IV openers, the components listed below shall be made of corrosion-resisting steel:
Type I, class 1 - Blade and handle
Type I, class 2 - Body and can guide
Type II - Wall-mounting bracket, extension arm, crank, and cutting wheel lever
Type III - Body, vertical shaft, table-clamping bracket, and can holder eccentric bushing
(when used).
Type IV - Body, feed wheel, reversible cutting blade, can holder, can guide, crank, vertical shaft and table-mounting bracket.
