3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS

3.1 Material.

3.1.1 Type I, Aluminum. The type I scoop shall be an integral casting of aluminum alloy.

3.1.2 Type II, Corrosion-resisting steel. The type II scoop shall be formed from a 300-series corrosion-resisting steel.

3.2 Design and construction. The body of the scoop shall be a half-cylinder measuring a 8 inches (20.3 cm) in length and 5 inches (12.7 cm) in diameter with an overall length of 12 inches (30.5 cm). The tolerances shall be + 1 inch (2.54 cm). The handle shall be positioned at an angle of 8 to 20 degrees to the scoop from the horizontal position for the type I Scoop and 25 to 35 degrees for the type II Scoop.\

3.2.1 Type I. The body of the scoop shall have a minimum average thickness of 0.055 inch (1.4 mm) when measured in four different locations around the edge of the body. The handle shall be cast integral with the body.

3.2.2 Type II. The body of the scoop shall have a minimum average thickness of 0.035 inch (0.9 mm) when measured in four different locations around the edge of the body. The body shall be fitted with a handle. The handle shall be fastened to the body by one of the following two methods.

                1. Flanged to the diameter and securely attached to the body of the scoop by spot-welding or continuous welding around the outside diameter of the flange.

                2. Continuously welded to a shield of the same material as the body. The shield shall not be less than 0.040 inch (1.0 mm) thick and shall be attached to the body of the scoop by spot-welding or continuous welding.

3.3 Finish.

3.3.1 Type I. The scoop shall have a smooth finish as defined in National Sanitation Foundation Standard No.2.

3.3.2 Type II. The scoop shall have a polished finish equivalent to a No. 2B or better as defined by the American Iron and Steel Institute handbook, “Finish for Stainless Steel.”

3.4 Marking. The scoop shall be marked with the manufacturer’s name, trade name, or trademark of such known character that the source may be readily determined.
