COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
ROLLING PIN, WOOD
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial
item description in preference to Federal Specification LLL-R-530.
This commercial item description (CID) covers four types
of wooden rolling pins:
Type I – Rolling pin with stationary handles, 2-3/8 inches minimum diameter, 12
inches minimum barrel length, with 3-1/4 inches minimum handle length.
Type II – Rolling pin with rotating handles, 2-3/16 inches minimum diameter,
and 10 inches minimum barrel length. Nylon or corrosion resisting steel
bearings, sleeves, or bushings.
Type III – Rolling pin with rotating handles, 3 inches minimum diameter, and 14
inches minimum barrel length. Nylon or corrosion resisting steel bearings,
sleeves, or bushings.
Type IV – Rolling pin without handles (pie or pastry pin), 1-1/2 inches minimum
diameter and 10-1/2 inches minimum overall length.
Salient characteristics.
The wood shall be birch, beech, maple, or sycamore. It shall be free of shakes,
splits, wormhole, decay knots, or loose filler.
The roller body shall be cylindrical with an out-of-roundness not to exceed
1/16 inch shall be straight within 1/16 inch. all edges shall be beveled.
The handles of the types I, II and III rolling pins shall be attached at the
center of each end in accordance with the manufacturer’s standard commercial
practice and shall not break, crack, permanently deform, or separate from the
roller when tested as specified.
All surfaces of the rolling pins shall be finished in accordance with the
manufacturer’s standard commercial practice.
Workmanship. The rolling pins shall be clean and free of dents, cracks,
slivers, splinters, loose grain, loose fillers, knots, bark, and unnatural
discoloration or surface bruises. There shall be no defects that adversely
affect serviceability or appearance.
