COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
POT HOLDER
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description for all federal agencies.
1. SCOPE
1.1 Scope. This commercial item description (cid) covers a cotton pot holder also known as a bakery pad.
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
2.1 Material and construction. The pot holder shall consist of the following components: (1) One piece of unbleached, undyed knitted cotton terry cloth weighing 23 ounces per square yard minimum (0.78 kg/square meter), (2) Two pieces of unbleached, undyed cotton duck weighing 9.0 ounces per square yard minimum (0.30 kg/square meter, (3) One piece of vinyl chloride plastic film, minimum weight 5.25 ounces per square yard (0.18 kg/square meter), sandwiched between the knitted terry and cotton duck cloths, and (4) One piece of heat resistant elastic cloth tape weighing 0.55 ounce per square yard (18.6 gm/square meter) with a minimum width of 1 inch (2.54 cm) and minimum length of 5-7/8 inches (14.9 cm).
2.2 Construction. The finished pot holder shall be assembled and sewn together in the following order of layers: Cotton terry cloth, plastic film, and both pieces of cotton duck cloth. The pot holder shall be 8-1/2 + 1/8 inches wide by 11-1/2 + 1/8 inches long (21.6 cm x 29.2 cm, + 3.2 mm). The corners of the pot holder may be either round or square shaped.
2.3 Stitching. The edges of the layers that form the pot holder shall be stitched together by cotton thread with 6 stitches per inch (2.4 stitches per cm), minimum, and shall be overedge stitched 10 stitches per inch minimum (3.9 stitches per cm). The ends of the stitches shall be secured by three (3) trying overlapping or backstitches to secure the ends of the stitching.
2.4 Elastic tape attachment. An elastic tape as specified in 3.1 shall be provided to permit the pad to be retained at the wrist of the user. The elastic tape shall be attached to the pot holder at both ends of the tape by one of the following methods: A single bartack with 42 stitches per tack, minimum; a double bartack with 28 stitches per tack, minimum; or non-corroding metal fasteners. The tape shall be securely attached through minimum 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) end folds and centered crosswise to the back of the pad. The elastic tape shall be located 1-1/4 + 1/4 inches (3.2 cm + 6.4 mm) from one edge (8-1/2 inch dimension) of the pot holder and lie parallel to the 8-1/2 inch (21.6 cm) dimension.
2.5 Workmanship. The pot holders shall be clean and free from any holes, cuts, tears, broken or missing yarns, open or loose stitches, or raw edges. No defects that affect appearance or serviceability shall be permitted.
