3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
3.1 Material. The teakettle body and cover shall be formed from stainless steel with a minimum thickness of 0.02 inch (0.5 mm). If a cantilever handle is used, it shall be made from a suitable plastic. If a bail handle is used, it shall be formed from stainless steel or a combination of stainless and plastic.
3.2 Construction. The teakettle shall have a minimum capacity of 4 quarts (3.8 liters). The teakettle shall have a pouring spout. The handle shall be either a bail, cantilever, or combination bail and cantilever type and shall be securely attached to the body. If a bail handle is used, it shall be vertically positioned. A cover locking device may be included within the handle at the manufacturer’s option. The teakettle shall have a removable cover. The cover shape shall blend with the curvature of the kettle and shall have a flange and lip formed to prevent it from falling off when the teakettle is tilted. The cover shall be provided with a plastic knob, securely attached to the center of the cover.
3.3 Marking. The teakettle shall be marked with the manufacturer’s name, trade name, or trademark of such known character that the source of manufacture may be readily determined.
3.4 Workmanship. The teakettles shall be clean and free from any cracks, fractures, malforming, scale, and pits. The items shall have no sharp edges, slivers, burrs, deep scratches, tool marks, or other defects which might affect serviceability, durability, or appearance.
