COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
COLANDER
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description for all federal agencies.
1. SCOPE
1.1 Scope. This commercial item description covers aluminum and corrosion-resisting steel colanders.
2. CLASSIFICATION
2.1 Classification. The colanders shall be of the following types and sizes.
Type I- Aluminum alloy
Size 1- 11 quart capacity (10.4 L)
Size 2- 14 to 16 quart capacity (13.2 to 15.1 L)
Type II- Corrosion-resisting Steel
Size 2- 14 to 16 quart capacity (13.2 to 15.1 L)
3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
3.1 Material. The type I colanders shall be formed from a 3000 series aluminum alloy. The type II colander shall be formed from corrosion resisting steel conforming to a type 300 series in accordance with ASTM A167 or A276.
3.2 Construction. The body of the colanders shall be formed without seams from a single piece of the specified material. The colanders shall be hemispherical in shape with a half-round open bead and have two handles made of aluminum, corrosion-resisting steel, nickel-chrome plated steel, or tin plated steel. The handles shall be either welded with corrosion resistant material or riveted to the body with no recesses and open seams and shall be located diametrically opposite each other. The dimensions of the colanders shall be as listed in table I. The body shall be fitted with a base and shall have a minimum of 4 perforations per square inch. The perforation size shall be consistent and the allowable diameter range shall be 1/8 to 9/32inch (3.2 to 7.1 mm). The number and spacing of the perforations shall be in accordance with the manufacturer’s standard commercial practice.
3.3 Finish. The type I colander shall be smooth on all surfaces and edges and shall be free from corrosion, discoloration, and stain. The type II colander shall be finished to the equivalent of a No. 2B finish or better as defined in the American Iron and Steel Institute’s Handbook, Finishes for Stainless Steel on all visible surfaces.
3.4 Standard compliance. The type I colanders shall meet the requirements of NSF International Standard Number 2.
