COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
OPENERS, CAN, ELECTRIC, HEAVY DUTY
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to MIL-O-40155.
1. ABSTRACT
1.1 Abstract. This commercial item description covers the following two types of heavy duty electric can openers:
Type I- Portable
Type II- Table
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
2.1 Design and construction. The can openers shall be electrically operated and designed to cut tops from circular and elliptical shaped cans of sizes up to and including No. 10 cans. Openers shall consist of a body with a removable feed wheel, cutting wheel, can holding device, can guide, and magnetic lid lifter that holds the can top after it has been cut off. Openers shall include provisions for lubricating bearings and other moving parts.
2.1.1 Body. The type I and type II opener bodies shall be fabricated of cast iron, cast zinc, or 300 series stainless steel or plastic (Type I only). Type I openers shall have a handle as an integral part of the body.
2.1.2 Feed wheel and cutting wheel. Feed wheels and cutting wheels for the type I and type II openers shall be fabricated of tool steel or alloy steel with a through hardness 50-58 measured on the Rockwell C scale. The diameter of the feed wheel shall not be less than 7/8 inches; the diameter of
